Top Tips For A Stress-free Move With Kids

Whatever age your kids are, moving presents a wide range of needs to be met and issues to be resolved. At Twin Towns Removalists, we’ve been helping people move for over twenty years and as a family-owned business, we understand the stresses and strains of moving, especially if you have youngsters in tow. We know moving day can be daunting, so we’ve put together our top tips for a stress-free moving with kids.

Preparation Is King

When it comes to moving, preparation has to be your watchword, and it’s even more important when you’ve got kids. They are likely to be nervous about the prospect of moving and so the last thing they need is to see their belongings and their family home hurriedly stuffed into boxes. We all know that leaving the house takes twice as long when you’ve got kids – moving house is no different.

Get Them Involved

Whether you’re taking advantage of your removalist’s packing services or doing it all yourself, even young children can get involved with the packing. Give them their own box and give them responsibility for packing some of their belongings. You may want to put them in charge of their plushies, or other favourite toys. It’s wise to supervise, especially if there are any breakables.

When you get to your new home, let your youngster unpack their boxes too. They’ll be able to have their favourite things near them from the get-go, and feeling involved in the whole process will help them settle in, as well as keep them occupied.

Take The Chance To Declutter

Moving is a great opportunity to declutter too, and you can encourage your kids to get rid of any toys they don’t play with anymore. It’s a great idea to donate these toys to charity, so your kids understand that the toys will still be loved and played with, as well as learning about giving to others.

Perfect Your Planning

Make sure your kids know what’s happening and when. Talk them through what to expect on the day and help them to get prepared by letting them check over their room on moving day. This is an especially important step for younger kids because it helps them see that nothing precious to them has been left behind. If you’re moving on a day when the kids will be at school or daycare, then get them to do this the night before, or on the morning of the move.

Get Them Involved

If your kids aren’t in school, and you can’t organise a sitter, then it’s important to get them involved on the big day. You could give older kids some simple cleaning tasks or get them to do some final checks to make sure nothing is left behind. Even just making sure everyone has a cool drink or a restorative hot beverage will keep kids busy and help them feel part of the move.

A great firm of removalists will be used to working around children and understand that it’s a difficult day for them as well as the adults. Twin Towns removalists are dedicated to making moving easy and make moving with kids as stress-free as possible. To find out more just get in touch.
