Can You Move House During Lockdown?

In Australia, lockdowns are in place across the state. In many cities, as soon the government lifts restrictions, they’re back again the following week.

It can be hard to plan a move around all these lockdowns. If you’re considering moving—or have already secured a new property and are ready to go—you may be wondering if it’s possible to move while a lockdown is in place.

In this article, we’ll go through the ins and outs of moving during a lockdown, helping your transition run safely and smoothly.

Moving House Is Still Permitted During Lockdown

Whether or not moving is permitted during lockdown depends on your state’s current restrictions. At the time of this article, moving house is allowed across Australia, including in Melbourne and Sydney’s hotspot areas.

In Sydney, you’re currently allowed to move if:

  • Your lease is up
  • You’ve reached settlement
  • You’re in an emergency situation

Make sure to carry any necessary documents, paperwork, or identification to highlight your reasons for moving if required by authorities.

There may be some further requirements for moving in your area—so make sure to check your local government’s website or call the COVID hotline to see if moving is allowed under your specific circumstances.

Can I Move Interstate During Lockdown?

Yes, at the time of this article, you can move interstate during the current lockdown, as long as it’s acceptable within the state or territory where you plan to move. For more information, check with the local authorities representing the state or territory you’re moving to.

You can generally move interstate even if you live in one of Sydney’s hotspots. The currently listed hotspot LGAs and regional areas are:

  • Blacktown
  • Campbelltown
  • Cumberland
  • Parramatta
  • Liverpool
  • Georges River
  • Canterbury-Bankstown
  • Fairfield
  • Dubbo
  • Newcastle and the Hunter Region
  • Northern Rivers
  • Far North NSW
  • Tamworth
  • Armidale

This list may change or expand in the coming weeks, so make sure to check with your local government or call the COVID hotline for clarification before proceeding with your move.

Can I Use A Removalist Company To Move During Lockdown?

Yes, you are free to book a removalist company to help you move within your state or interstate during lockdown. In New South Wales, the government has laid out specific conditions for hiring removalists.

If a removalist lives in a hotspot area, they won’t be able to leave their LGA. This restriction means the removalist will only be able to help you move within that area.

Removalists living outside of hotspots are free to work anywhere in Greater Sydney or across regional areas of the state. As such, you’ll be able to hire one of these removalists to help you move anywhere within New South Wales.

All removalists will follow COVID safety precautions and exercise social distancing when assisting with your move. Your removalists will wear masks at all times to keep everyone involved safe.
