What Can't I Store In A Storage Unit?

A self-storage unit is great for storing furniture, valuables and even vehicles, but did you know there are some things you can't put in storage? We've put together this helpful guide to make sure you're in the know.

What can't I store in a storage unit?

Combustible items or chemicals

Storage unit temperatures can change quickly and dramatically, so they're not an ideal place to store items that are toxic or can combust or burst into flames. If you do, you run the risk of blowing up your unit - and possibly even the entire facility in the process - and carrying the cost of damages. What items are considered combustible or hazardous?

  • Petrol or gasoline
  • Paint and paint thinner
  • Solvents
  • Medical supplies

If you want to store a mower, brush cutter or any other equipment, make sure it's first empty of fuel. Barbecues need to be cleaned and empty of gas before they can be stored.

Perishable items

Fancy cockroaches or vermin running about your storage unit? We didn't think so. That's what can happen if perishable items find their way into storage, even with storage facilities taking great measures to prevent infestation. These items include:

  • Fresh or canned food
  • Animal food

Animals and plants

Regardless of how tempting it might sound, you can't keep your pet or plant in storage while you're away. There are many pet sitter companies and services available to keep your pet happy and healthy when you're not available.

Suspicious items

Illegal or stolen items or substances simply can't be stored in our units. And while we're at it, we can't take guns, bombs, or anything that might explode.

Wet items

While you can store items made to get wet - like boats or diving gear - these can't be wet when you place them in your unit. Dark, closed environments are a haven for mould and mildew to grow on wet surfaces or items. We know you don't want to unlock your unit to find your items damaged, so it's important you make sure your items are completely dry before you leave them with us.

Priceless, invaluable items

Simply put, don't leave us with something you can never replace. We do everything we can to keep all items safe, but there's always the slim chance accidents can happen on site. Additionally, you may experience hardship that could lead to your stored belongings being auctioned. While we don't mind you storing antiques or valuables, if the item simply can't be replaced we recommend leaving it out of the unit.

Money

Cash and other kinds of currency are much better off in a deposit box. As with irreplaceable items, there's a slight risk of accidents happening on the premises. Additionally, you'll ensure more protection for your money when it's kept safely in a bank.

Unregistered or uninsured vehicles

Most storage companies are happy to accept vehicles, but whether you're storing a car, boat, caravan, or another kind of vehicle, you need to make sure it's registered and insured before leaving it in storage.
