Moving House? Here's An Ultimate Checklist To Help

Moving house fills most people with a mix of emotions. It can be exciting to move to a new home and a fresh start, especially if the move is for positive reasons, such as starting a family or buying your first house. But it can also be highly stressful! Packing up, sorting your belongings, and ticking all the boxes to ensure you’ve covered everything you need - it takes a lot of work.

To help you out, we’ve put together our ultimate Moving House Checklist covering all the essential aspects of your move.

Before You Move

Before you start packing, we recommend spending time getting organised with the following:

• Create a spreadsheet for each room of the house.
• List everything you want to take with you.
• Start with the big
furniture and work through the smaller items.
• For items you decide not to take, list them on reseller sites such as Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or eBay.
• Plan a trip to your local waste disposal area or recycling transfer station for items that are no longer usable.
• If you plan to use
professional removalists, speak to a few in your area for quotes, plan who to work with and get them booked.

We recommend starting this process 2-3 months before you move to give yourself plenty of time. This will help streamline your packing and reduce your overall move stress.

Ready to Start Packing

Packing takes a lot longer than people realise, so make sure to start early. Designate a room to start storing packed items - perhaps a garage or spare bedroom.

When you’re ready to begin:

  • Gather all the packing materials you’ll need, including boxes, sellotape, packing labels and bubble wrap/old newspaper.
  • Old blankets and towels are also perfect for wrapping valuables ready to move.
  • Start in the least used rooms or storage spaces and pack anything you’re least likely to need before you move.
  • Utilise suitcases and large, sturdy bags to reduce how many boxes you need - these can also be easier to move and transport.

Move Preparations

As well as packing up your old home, additional things can help make your move seamless - and they can be easy to overlook!

Remember to:

  • Change your address with your bank and other important organisations.
  • Set up a mail redirect for a month or two to catch any other mail - Australia Post require a 30-day notice period to set this up from your old address to your new address.
  • Safely store important documents so they don’t get lost, including passports and birth certificates.
  • Plan time to say goodbye to your old home and neighbourhood. Perhaps hold a small garden party or farewell drinks.

Make time for self-care - moving can be stressful and will take its toll if you don’t take care of yourself. It’s okay to leave boxes unpacked and take time to rest and relax if you need to.

The Day of the Move

In the last few days before you move and perhaps the day or two after, there are usually still a few bits that need to be taken care of:

  • Clean or schedule cleaners to come into your old home and ensure everything is neat and tidy.
  • If you’ve been renting, you’ll usually have to use a professional cleaner. Check with your agent if there is anything else you need to do.
  • If you’re using removalists, confirm the time they’ll be arriving and anything else you need to prepare.
  • If you need to hand over keys, confirm a time to drop them off to your agents.
  • If possible, pick up your new keys before your removalists arrive so everything is ready to get inside the new home.
  • Once everything is ready, do a final walk-through of your old home and make sure you haven’t missed anything.
